Applications are invited for the above posts within the Rolls-Royce Manufacturing and On-Wing University Technology Centre (see:
http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/utc)inthe Division of Manufacturing Engineering, Faculty of Engineering. The UTC is granted with a EPSRC funded project in robotics for nuclear environments.
The person(s) appointed will be based in the area of mechatronics/robotics development for harsh environments. Specifically, this research will focus on mechatronics/robotics design, kinematic analysis and developing control strategies for in-situ repair work in constrained and hazardous environments/ manufacturing working for nuclear environments. In this role you will be at the forefront of research that offers significant technological challenge and innovation, with an aim to improving quality in mechatronics/robotics applications. As a result, this position offers the opportunity for close collaboration with industrial partners. The opportunity to participate in some teaching activities is available for those wishing to pursue an academic career.
Candidates must possess a good knowledge of design, kinematic analysis, actuation solutions related to mechatronics/robotics and demonstrate strong evidence of developing their own software (in MATLAB, C++ and/or LabVIEW) to control such systems. Previous expertise in developing customised mechatronics/robotics (e.g. for manipulation/surveillance) would be preferable.
Apart from being capable to lead the research work on this project, good communication, presentation/reporting and publishing skills are required for the person appointed to effectively interact with the international academic and industrial partners involved in this demanding research project. In addition to carrying out project work, the researcher will benefit from exposure to internationally leading industrial companies that are interested in the results of this project and willing to collaborate on spin-put individual projects.
Candidates must possess a good first degree in mechatronics/mechanical/ engineering or related disciplines, and preferably a PhD degree in mechatronics/robotics. but late start could be agreed, and will offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of two years.
